Every now and then a perfect storm can form during a dirt track that produces a very scary accident. This was certainly the case on Saturday night at Clay County Speedway in Flora, Illinois. The always competitive UMP Modifieds were on track for their feature event and the drivers were all fighting hard for the same piece of real estate. Drivers were fighting hard for the third position coming out of turn four to the start finish line.
The #88 machine driven by Bill Dugger was running door to door with the #1 of Larry Anderson when the two make contact. The contact sent Dugger’s modifed into a series of flips on the front stretch right at the finish line. His car came to rest in a very dangerous position on its side with the top of the car facing a whole field of oncoming traffic. The #02 piloted by Billy Lewis had nowhere to go as he slid into Dugger’s modified and made very hard contact with the roof of his modified. This is perhaps the worst case scenario for a race car driver as most cars aren’t designed for and simply can’t hold up when they take a very hard hit to the roof or top of the roll cage. This same type of accident has seriously injured racers and always looks bad. Thankfully, Bill Dugger was able to walk away from this very scary incident. Check out the great onboard video from Zach Fair as he was riding right behind Dugger and his camera captured the whole accident.
