“The Human Highlight Reel” Geoff Ensign earned his nickname in spectacular fashion at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, California. The driver who calls Sabsatopol, California home was on track for his qualifying session when things went wrong. Ensign was entering turn three on his first timed lap when his non-wing sprint car bicycled on him. He quickly corrected and brought the right side tires of his car back on the ground but that led to bigger problems.
Geoff’s #3 sprint car was now heading straight for the outside retaining wall and it was too late to do anything about it. He hit the large dirt cushion that had built up near the wall and actually ramped over the wall and landed outside of the track. Ensign was lucky enough to land on all four wheels and keep the engine running. He was even able to drive back out on the track and attempt to finish his qualifying attempt. However his sprint car had been damaged enough as he was unable to get back up to speed which forced him to the pits.
This incident may have exposed a major safety problem at Ocean Speedway that track officials need to address. The crowd showed their appreciation for Ensign when he came back on track and we can enjoy the great video as well.
