Video: Bloomquist Wins Dramatic Dirt Late Model Dream

Saturday nights main event at the 19th annual Dirt Late Model Dream featured everything that a dirt track fan could hope for – great racing, multiple grooves, and a great battle for the top spot. When it was all said and done it was Scott Bloomquist who stood on top for his record sixth Dirt Late Model Dream victory.

Bloomquist ran fifth for most of the first half of the event to save his tires. However, just before halfway in the 100 lap event, Bloomquist was on the charge. By lap 60 he had ran down race leader Jimmy Mars and was clearly the fastest car on the track. Mars held off Black Sunshine for as long as he could, but Mars was no match for Bloomquist who took the lead for good on lap 65.

Bloomer did have to fend off challenges on two restarts from Dennis Erb Jr.  But by the time the checkered fell Bloomquist had nearly a straightaway lead.

After the dominating victory Bloomquist said in victory lane that he knew Eldora was going to turn his luck around, “It’s been kind of a rough spring,” said Bloomquist. “We’ve not had the wins that we are used to or accustomed to. We’ve had a lot of bad luck, just a lot of crazy things happening to us. It’s been bad, but I told everybody (entering the Dream), ‘This is gonna turn around. It’s gonna turn around quick and big. We’re gonna go win this hundred-grand. That will be the end of this bad luck streak.’

Bloomquist credited Friday night’s main event to his $100,000 victory on Saturday, “That’s one thing that last night did for us – instead of getting out there and racing hard, I came in and I tried a couple of things. When the cautions came out I’d try something drastic just to give me some direction to go. We hardly ever get that (type of opportunity) here.”

Dennis Erb Jr. was content with finishing second to Bloomquist, “We just kept plugging away and we got up there to the front,” said Erb,  “We couldn’t stay with Scott but we’ll take second.”

Third place finisher Josh Richards ran as high as second from the 28th starting spot, but the fast-time provisional starter was disqualified and placed last in the rundown when his Rocket Chassis house car weighed in 32 pounds below the 2,300-pound minimum at the post-race weigh-in. He attributed the inspection failure to his forgetting to bolt a lead weight to the car during his team’s scramble to repair damage sustained in a heat-race tangle.
