The Last Hoosier Hundred At Indiana State Fairgrounds Set For May 23

According to the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Event Center, the fairgrounds’ one-mile dirt track is scheduled to be converted from a dirt surface to an all-weather track of crushed limestone for horse racing and parking for the state fair. This essentially ends one of the richest and most prestigious open wheel Sprint car races in the United States, the Hoosier Hundred.

The track, once known as the “Track of Champions,” we undergo the conversion after this year’s final running of the legendary event on May 23,2019. Economics was blamed as the cause.

“The economics of the horse industry and their desire to use the one-mile track year-round instead of the half-mile currently in the infield won out in the end,” said USAC Series Coordinator Levi Jones.

The USAC team is looking for another venue to host the legendary race in 2020 and beyond, but the legacy of the race will remain at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Steeped in tradition, seven winners of the Hoosier Hundred have also won the Indianapolis 500. Those include A.J. Foyt, who captured six Hoosier Hundred titles.

In addition to Foyt, Bob Sweikert, Jimmy Bryan, Rodger Ward, Parnelli Jones, Mario Andretti, and Al Unser Sr. won the Indianapolis 500 and the Hoosier Hundred. Winning both of the races in the same year was tougher. Accomplishing that feat was Ward (1958), Foyt (1961 & 1964), and Al Unser Sr. (1970 & 1971).

Currently, Kody Swanson has won the last four-in-a-row, which was interrupted by a rain cancellation in 2017. He will be given a chance to win the fifth, but will not be afforded the opportunity to match Foyt’s Six wins.

Other multiple winners of the iconic race include Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Sr., Jack Hewett, Dave Darland, and Jimmy Bryan.
