The 49th World 100 At Eldora

The 49th World 100 roared to life at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio and the action was hot from the start. During the Thursday night $10,000-to-win Twin 25 main events, Billy Moyer and Hudson O’Neal found their way into the winner’s circle. The Twin 25 races were just a taste of what was to come at the house that Earl built. The World 100 always features the biggest names in Late Model racing, and some of the finest racing on the planet.

Friday

Friday’s racing was ushered in by more great weather as racers hit the track for hot laps, qualifying, and heat races. When the dirt settled the fields were set for a pair of great $10,000 World 100 preliminary races at Eldora with two groups of 24 racers were ready to hit the track and run for the money.

The Group A preliminary race saw Illinois native Dennis Erb Jr on the pole when the green flag dropped. Erb was able to take the lead on the 11th lap during a restart after a crash and he never looked back. Chris Madden charged form the 14th starting spot to finish second but never was able to close the distance to get around Erb.

Group B was packed with some talented racers so it was a guarantee the preliminary race was going to be just as exciting as Group A’s. Jonathan Davenport began the race in the fifth position but after 25 laps of racing, he was able to find his way to the front to take the victory. Darrel Lanigan finished second behind Davenport and Kyle Bronson finished third to round out the podium of Group B.

Saturday

When Saturday arrived there were 98 late model racers in the pits at Eldora ready to try and win one of the biggest races on dirt. Multiple states and countries were all represented by entries in the 49th edition of The World 100. Everything about this race is huge from the crowd to the event production, and even the 50/50 raffle is massive with a take-home amount that eclipsed the $80,000 mark for the lucky winner.

With the pageantry of the opening ceremonies over it was time to get down to business and start racing. There were a total of six 15 lap heat races that transferred the top three drivers into the main event. In heat one Hudson O’Neal, Jonathan Davenport, and Tim McCreadie all made the cut. Heat two saw Stormy Scott, Ricky Weiss, and Scott Bloomquist transfer. In heat three Mason Zeigler, Kyle Bronson, and Mike Marlar fought their way into the show. Heat four sent Dale McDowell, Shannon Babb, and Chad Simpson to The World 100. In heat five Bobby Pierce, Shanon Buckingham, and Johnny Scott punched their tickets to the feature. Heat six brought John Blankenship, Jimmy Owens, and Frank Heckenast Jr. to The World 100.

With the first 18 spots of The World 100 filled by the heat race transfers, it came down to a pair of 20 lap B-Features to fill the remaining spots. Only five racers from each B-Feature would be invited to participate in The World 100 and the racing was exciting. From the first B-Feature Chris Madden, Chase Junghans, Darrell Lanigan, Shane Clanton, and Josh Richards advanced. The second B-Feature saw Brandon Sheppard, Brian Shirley, Tyler Erb, RJ Conley, and Michael Norris transfer to The World 100.

The World 100 now had all of its 30 starting spots filled with the fastest late model drivers in the world and it was time for the dirt dance to begin. For the next 100 laps, every racer on the grid raced for an opportunity to become one of the legends who concurred this event and added their name to the famous trophy.

During the first 60 laps of the World 100, Jonathan Davenport, Mazon Siegler, John Blankenship, and Bobby Pierce all fought for the lead of the race. Every lap saw these drivers throwing daggers at each other trying to gain position and negotiate lap traffic. Ultimately, it was Jonathan Davenport who would conquer all and go on to win his third World 100 at Eldora. What made this win even more impressive is how well Davenport drove his number 49 machine after the power steering failed on lap 30.
