Competitors with the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series are going to be racing for a richer championship in 2019. Promoter Ray Cook recently announced the winner’s share of the point’s fund has been increased to $10,053. This is almost double the $5,053 the champion received in 2018.
“We’re proud to be able to announce this, I wish we could have announced this sooner. We’ve been working on it since the PRI show in December,” Cook said. “For this stretch of short of races, it’s bigger than I ever thought it would be. If all goes well and I could get some more help towards the Southern Nationals, I’d like to do it for there too.”
The 2019 season kicks off for the miniseries on March 22-23 with events at Georgia’s Oglethorpe Speedway Park and Cochran Motor Speedway. In total, 14 races are scheduled for this year’s campaign.
Cook discussed the strategy that went into laying out this year’s schedule.
“The fact that race tracks are uniquely arranged together in their own region of the Southeast, the schedule just goes together,” the North Carolina native explained. “Another thing I like about the schedule is its just two weekends in each month. Two weekends in March, April and May so it leaves time for people to regroup, get their cars ready to go for another two weeks.”
The points fund will be paid when the tour finishes at 411 Motor Speedway on Memorial Day.
Hazard, Kentucky’s Eric Wells streaked to the 2018 title with the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series. Other former champions include Brandon Overton (2017), Donald McIntosh (2016, 2015), Billy Ogle Jr. (2014) and Steve Casebolt (2013).
