(WARNING: VIDEO CONTAINS EXPLICIT LANGUAGE) Here at OneDirt.com we eat, drink, and breathe dirt track racing, which is exactly why we find the above video so disgusting!
First let’s bring you up to speed. The above video was taken at Can-Am Motorsports Park during a Mod-Lite Feature on June 30th. The video is attached to Justin Williams’ Mod Lite as he makes his way through the field. Right after Williams moves into second, a caution comes out and the field lines up for a restart. Williams moves over and lets the car in front of him take the spot back, as they revert back to the last completed lap. On the ensuing restart, Williams makes a move to try to take back second and makes contact with the driver in front of him. It is obvious from the video that it was just a simple racing deal; a hole was there and it closed up. Not really anyone’s fault, just a racing deal…simple enough right?
But at the 7 minute mark in the video, things turn crazy. As it turns out, the driver that Williams made contact with was the son of owner of the track Tiger Chapman. The owner and more importantly father then storms on the track and proceeds to punch and scream at Williams before being drug away by another official. The stunned look on the young man’s face is the very same look we had watching the video.
Before we brought you this story we confirmed that the person in the video is truly the owner of the speedway.
It’s bad enough that anyone, much less the very track owner, would stoop to this level to both physically and verbally assault another driver regardless of his age, not to mention the example that he is teaching his own son about how to face adversity. In what little defense the track owner has, he did come on the P.A. later that night and apologize for his actions.
Understand we don’t know much about the track or Chapman, but regardless, as a track owner this type of behavior has the ability to kill Can-Am’s future. If you were a driver/fan at the track would you want to come back and spend your money supporting an owner like this next week?
The reaction from the dirt world has left a lot of people saying they will never venture out to Can-Am Speedway unless there is a change in ownership – we can’t say we don’t blame them:
Tiger Chapman will never get a cent of my money. Uncalled for under any circumstances – Dirt Racing Connection
I see why nobody goes to Can-Am anymore…way to promote your local business – Comment on video.
Can-Am will not get a dollar of my money for as long as Chapman owns it. – Fan at the track that night.
Listen we all lose our cool, but this type of behavior CAN NOT be accepted at the dirt track, just like it isn’t accepted anywhere else. It’s one thing to stand up for your son who you believe was wronged. It’s completely another to act this foolishly and threaten another young man’s life after you assaulted him.
