It seems like just yesterday that veteran racer, Ray Cook announced his foray into promoting with a brand-new miniseries. However, the reality is that it’s now been 15 years since the North Carolina native revealed his plans for a summertime tour, known as the Southern Nationals.
Back in 2005 the miniseries featured seven races in nine days in late July. Fast forward to present day and the annual classic is preparing for 11 races in 15 days. In fact, the 15th annual Schaeffer’s Oil Southern National Series kicks off this Saturday, July 13 at Wythe Raceway (Rural Retreat Virginia) with a $10,000-to-win event. Two weeks later it wraps up Gary Hall’s Tazewell Speedway (Tazewell, Tennessee) with another $10,000-to-win affair.
The miniseries is slated to visit 11 different tracks in five states, including Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina. Payouts range from $3,500-to-win programs to five $10,000-to-win races.
Toccoa, Georgia’s Casey Roberts claimed the title in 2018 and became a two-time champ. Other former champs include Brandon Overton, Devin Gilpin, Chris Madden (five titles), Jonathan Davenport (two titles), Tommy Kerr, Anthony White and inaugural champ, Jeff Cooke.
A total point’s fund in excess of $15,000 is on the line with $5,053 earmarked for the champion. The top Rookie will receive a $1,000 cash award.
In addition, at each event the highest finishing CT525 engine in the main event will receive a $200 bonus and the highest finishing Steel Head/SPEC engine will also receive a $200 bonus
