World Of Outlaws: The Night BeFour the Crowns At Eldora

Eldora speedway hosts an event unlike any other at the end of September every year. The Four Crown Nationals hosts all three major USAC series along with the All Star sprints. This year will see the 37th running of the famed event. Previous winners include legendary names such as Tony Stewart, Jack Hewitt and Kyle Larson.

There have been a variety of memorable things that have happened at the Four Crown Nationals. Perhaps the most notable moment in the event’s history was in 1998. Jack Hewitt would jump into a car for all four classes and go on to be the only driver to ever win all four crowns in one night. In 2011 a young driver relatively new to the Ohio dirt racing scene named Kyle Larson would go on to win the USAC Silver Crown, the USAC Midget and USAC Sprint Car events in one night.

To add to the list of premier racing, the Friday night before the Four Crown, Eldora hosts the top winged sprint car drivers in the country, The World of Outlaws, making it a weekend that tops open wheel fan’s dreams and old guy’s bucket lists.

The Friday night before sees the best national drivers come into town while also bringing in the best local and regional talent, creating a diverse field full of action. This year’s Friday night show would see the top qualifying spot go to a regional driver in Hunter Schuerenburg. “Hunter Percent” would be the lone driver to break the twelve second bracket in qualifying locking him into a pole starting position for his heat race.

The the other highlight of the night was a preview for the USAC Silver Crown series. To speed up Saturday’s racing program the “big cars” as may call them, took to the track for a hot lap session followed by their qualify session on Friday night. A series that was once in question, has now had a resurgence gathering large car counts and big names. The Silver Crown series has seen names such as Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, and Pancho Carter as champions in its forty-seven year history. It was once the premier “stepping stone” series to get to the Indy 500. On this particular Friday night, the veteran Indiana driver “the throttle” Shane Cottle turned the fastest qualifying lap, garnering him the pole position for Saturday’s main event.

Fast time on the night went to “the throttle” Shane Cottle.

The preliminary action may have been good, but the fireworks on the night were in the main event for the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars. Brent Marks would go on to take his first World of Outlaw win at the Ohio racetrack but it wasn’t without a heavy charge from some veteran masters.

At the drop of the green flag, Logan Schuchart would get the jump and build a giant lead. While Pennsylvania driver was cruising out front the action behind him was heating up. Brent Marks would begin his charge gaining on Schuchart only to be slowed by a caution with 18 laps to go. On the lap twelve restart the field would get one circuit in before a red flag for a Daryn Pittman rollover, which he walked away from without injury.

Greg Wilson passes 2018 Knoxville Nationals winner Brad Sweet on his way to a 3rd place finish with a hard charge from the 23rd starting position.

With 17 to go the green flag would fly and Schuchart blasted off to the lead once again. This time he wouldn’t get out of the grasp of Marks who would pass Schuchart with lots of company on his tale.

The last 7 seven laps turned into a typical short-track shootout. Marks would lead the way but local legend Dave Blaney had the 23rd starting Greg Wilson in tow, trying to take the Pennsylvania natives lead away. Blaney would have a shot out of turn two when Marks encountered lap traffic and had to work around National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Jac Haudenschild. Blaney’s charge would come up short letting Logan Schuchart and Greg Wilson get by.

Marks would go on to take the white flag with a little breathing room leading to his first Eldora Speedway victory.

An emotional Brent Marks dedicated the win to the late Greg Hodnett and the Hodnett family. Hodnett, the poplar Pennsylvanian driver had passed away the night before during an accident in Pennsylvania. Marks raced against Hodnett while coming up through the ranks in Pennsylvania as part of the iconic Pennsylvania Posse group of sprint car drivers.
