Results From The WoO Three-Day Independence Weekend Showcase

The World of Outlaws Independence Day weekend showcase was designed to reboot the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars and World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Models series as the racing world begins to emerge from the COVID-19 shutdown.

Not only did the event serve to kickstart the racing season into motion, but it also marked the first time in history the two Series competed together in the middle of summer to race on the same days at the same track. Historically, the two series begin and end the season in this fashion.

Surprisingly, the grandstands were full of cheering fans, due to the state-of-the-art coronavirus screening. The Thursday, Friday, and Saturday shows were set up with special eliminator races on an opening day and a Friday program and a full Saturday night program.

Late Models Eliminator Night (Thursday)

Coming into the event, series leaders Brad Sweet and Brandon Sheppard were favored by most observers to do well. Sweet held a 66-point lead over Donny Schatz in the Sprint Cars, and Sheppard was looking to get his Rocket Shepp back on track after a heart-breaking Learnerville weekend.

The special “Eliminator” qualifying night ended with Ricky Weiss’s car failing tech inspection with an illegal quarter-panel height after outrunning Cade Dillard. Weiss was moved back three positions and Dillard declared the winner. The eliminator results determined starting positions for the qualifying rounds of Friday and Saturday night’s shows.
