(Special to Adam Mollenkopf)
Twenty-one Sprint Cars checked in for the return of the King of the Hill event at Show Low Speedway Park (Show Low, Arizona). Sprint Cars and Winged Micro Sprints took center stage at the facility for the first time under the newest track management.
Track crews overcame an afternoon rain storm to give the racers a great surface for their three heats races and a hammer-down main event. Heat races set the line up, giving young Travis Oldfield the pole alongside “Charging” Charles Davis.
Davis would win the battle getting into turn one with RJ Johnson in tow. Davis and Johnson would quickly get out to a sizable lead before an altercation with a lap car took both leaders out of competition. Third-place runner, Kyle Shipley inherited the point when the race resumed.
Shipley was able to hold off multiple attempts by at hard-charging Colton Hardy to park it on the front stretch.
Shipley said, “It was a lot of luck, but damn it felt good to get the win!”
Rounding out the the top three were New Mexico’s Asa Kesterson. This race also saw Nathan High come out of retirement to make a 16th-to-6th run. Admittedly out of shape, High was all smiles all weekend long.
Thanks goes out to Shon Deskins and crew for an amazing effort to pull this race off in a short period of time.
