In the ever-popular Super Late Models division, Chris Madden continued on his roll as he battled to the win Friday night at the 2020 Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals Series. Madden scored a $10,053 payday at 411 Motor Speedway, in a talent-loaded field and in front of a capacity crowd.

Chris Madden shows some extra excitement after being jeered by fans.

Cory Hedgecock grabbed the early lead when the green dropped with Chris Madden, Dale McDowell, Ross Bailes, and series point leader Brandon Overton chasing the leader closely. Tyler Millwood’s poor starting position posed a challenge, but the driver took the opportunity to pick up several positions early in the race.

The fourth-running Bailes began to challenge and attack the #17 of Dale McDowell for third. This allowed the Hedgecock and Madden to put some distance between the two front-runners and the rest of the field. Hedgecock ran a high-line forcing Madden to work the bottom in an effort to get a run on the leader.

Mechanical trouble forced the #R1 of Ricky Hickman to the pits, retiring from the race. With Madden continuing to work the bottom line, gaining inches each lap, Hedgecock was unable to shake the challenger.

A bobble by Hedgecock on lap 30 allowed Madden the opportunity that he had been waiting for as he powered by to take the lead, dragging McDowell with him. Suddenly, Hedgecock was in jeopardy of losing another position as the fourth-place running Brandon Overton found some traction on the track.

McDowell pressured Madden in the final laps but couldn’t mount a serious charge to attempt a pass on the leader. Madden took the win with McDowell finishing second. Hedgecock recovered to finish third with Overton and Bailes rounding out the top five.

Brandon Miller would set fast time in qualifying earning the pole for the 25 lap feature. Keeping him company on the front row was Jesse Lowe. Lowe has been on an incredible hot streak the past few weeks and he took the lead on the start. Lowe, Miller, Rusty Ballenger, Trevor Sise, and Jason Cardwell would make up your top five on the start. It was a very hot night and the racing action was equally as hot. Trevor Sise started near the front but seemed to have missed the setup on his #73 as he began slipping back as the laps ticked away. Up front Jesse Lowe was in his own zip code but the fight was on between Ballenger and the #116 of Cameron Weaver. The caution would wave as the #2 of Terry Poore went for a spin. Pole-sitter Brandon Miller would lose a position to Josh Henry in the later laps. Up front it was all Jesse Lowe who cruised to another win.

Open Wheel

Blake Brown has been one of the most successful drivers in east TN so it was no surprise when he took control of the field at the start. Ricky Tinch fresh off a win the previous night at Crossville Speedway was having a strong run going in the second spot ahead of AJ Garber, Wayne James, and 2019 Track Champion Jimmy Dalton. The caution would wave for the #4 of Chase Lawson who went for a spin in turn four slowing the pace. Back under green and Tinch was giving no breathing room to the leader as he showed him the nose on the inside multiple times. Wayne James started in the top five but was giving up spots as the laps wore on. The top two would put some distance on Jeff Hamby who had now moved into the third spot. Brown would hold off a late charge and pick up another win.
