Lil’ Haud Claims 7th Win Of 2020 In His 300th WoO Start

Entering the 2020 season, Sheldon Haudenschild had seven feature wins through his three years as a full-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car driver. On Saturday night, he doubled his career record from the first two seasons by winning at Kokomo Speedway in his 300th career start.

The World of Outlaws Sprints Cars last appeared at Kokomo Speedway on June 3, 2015, with Joey Saldana beating Donny Schatz in the feature. Over five years later at the track, Schatz finds himself the runner up again as Haudenschild beat the 10-time Champion to the checkered flag. Ironically, Schatz was looking for his 300th WoO career win while Haudenschild was starting his 300th WoO career race.

Green Flag

Haudenschild led the opening lap and began pulling away from Schatz early in the feature. The leaders began to encounter traffic which tightened up the race in the top spots. Picking his way through traffic, Haudenschild ran the high side of the track while Schatz diligently worked the bottom.

On lap eight, Schatz snuck underneath Haudenschild with the pair racing side by side. A slower car blocked Haudenschild’s drive off of Turn 4 which allowed Schatz to grab the lead on lap 9.

Haudenschild continued to work the top, hitting the cushion hard enough at times to allow Schatz to pull away. A couple of cautions put the field back together and Haudenschild mounted a charge on a late-race restart to draw even and race the leader side-by-side. This time Schatz was on the top and Haudenschild was running the bottom line. Haudenschild made better work of the low line than Schatz could make at the top and reclaimed the lead on Lap 25.

Haudenschild never relinquished the lead and seemed to be pulling away at the end. Schatz finished second, and Logan Schuchart tightened up the season point race by taking third. Points leader Brad Sweet finished in 11th place with an engine that was struggling.

Points leader Brad Sweet was running 4th until his engine began to expire. He finished in 11th place.
