Former series champion Brian Shirley showed he still has the right stuff in the Summer Nationals’ Hell Tour with a strong showing Thurday night at La Salle Speedway. The tour’s challenge week started with a rain out at the Charleston Speedway on Tuesday, then a scheduled day off on Wednesday. Shirley’s win on Thursday begins a hectic weekend of action.
Next up is Terre Haute on Friday, Pevely, Missouri’s I-55 Raceway on Saturday, then Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln, Illinois on Sunday before another well earned Monday off.
Shirley’s win on Thursday came from the sixth spot on the starting grid. Working his way through the field quickly, he began to put pressure on leader Babb on lap 12. The leader was able to repel Shirley’s attacks until lap 21 when the Chatham, Illinois driver powered past series leader Babb for the lead. Shirley held the top spot for the rest of the 41 lapper and captured his 16th career Summer Nationals win, but the first since July of 2014.
