Austin Williams of Yorba Linda, California, won Saturday night’s 30-lap “California Racers Hall of Fame Night” AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint race at Perris Auto Speedway. He passed Brody Roa five laps from the finish and led the rest of the way to beat Max Adams, his brother Cody Williams, Danny Faria Jr. and Roa. Roa’s finish enabled him to pass Damion Gardner for the point lead after Gardner flipped during the feature.
Austin Williams is the son of National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Rip Williams, and part of the three-Williams brothers Jory race team – Cody, Austin, and Logan Williams. The popular #92 Moose car of Tom and Laurie Sertich debuted a refurbished team with driver R. J. Johnson. Using the evening to dial in the car, the Moose team showed a lot of promise with the Arizona based driver. Johnson is a five-time and the defending USAC Sands Chevrolet Southwest Sprint Car champion.
Max Adams continues his strong showing after winning his first AMSOIL USAC-CRA Sprint Car Series victory at Santa Maria Raceway earlier this month. Youngster Joel Rayborne, having just turned 16-years-old last Monday, battled a loose car all night, but showed more progress in his rookie season. Rayborne qualified 18th of 22 entries, transferred from his heat to the main, and finished 16th of 20 starters.
Matt Stewart, also celebrating his birthday on raceday, piloted the Bellegante #23. Initially Stewart’s car looked strong then appeared to be wounded as the evening progressed. Showtime Danny Sheridan has also showed plenty of muscle upon his return back to the series. The next race in the AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car series is scheduled for September 1 – 2 at Calistoga Speedway for the “11th Annual Louie Vermeil Classic,” the start of California Sprint Week.
Among the racing legends that attended the California Racers’ Hall of Fame night were Cory Kruseman, National Sprint Car Hall of Famers; Mike Arthur (2015), Shane Carson (2007), Chuck Gurney (2004), Brad Noffsinger (2013), Jimmie Oskie (2000), and Rip Williams (2009).
