We like to believe that our heroes are fearless embodiment of all that is manly, but the fact is that even the most badass men are only human. Race car drivers are highly regarded in American culture as warriors of speed pushing their bodies and machines to the absolute limit. Yet even the most accomplished racers can be scared crapless, as this next video shows.
No less a legend than three-time NASCAR Cup winner Darrell Waltrip recently took a ride in Tony Stewart’s Modified dirt late model, and it was such a scary ride that Waltrip seemed on the verge of tears, a heart attack, or maybe both.
Ever the country gentleman, Waltrip is well-known for not swearing much. But after hopping into Tony Stewart’s late model modified, Waltrip found himself out of breathe from screaming and cursing. It’s absolutely hilarious to hear him insisting they’re about to crash, asking how many more laps they have, and basically just hollering for help as Stewart gets oh-so-close to the wall.
Waltrip, who was racing in NASCAR at a time when safety equipment was more a suggestion than a requirement, begs Stewart to “Back ‘er down” as they get sideways at Eldora Speedway. If you want to see a living legend screaming for his life, you don’t want to miss this video.
