Some people define their lives by the sports they play or watch. That’s why in recent years we’ve seen some truly elaborate funerals for football, soccer, and even NASCAR fans. After all, who can deny a dead person their final wish? Still, there are always those who take fandom a little too far, as is the case with our next story.
A Jackson, Michigan woman is charged with defrauding social security, among other crimes, after she kept her dead friend’s body at the house they shared, often sitting up to watch NASCAR races with his stone cold corpse reports MLive.com.
It’s a sad, morbid case, one that centers on Charles Zigler. Zigler reportedly lived with Linda Chase for years, and when he died in December of 2010, Chase saw no reason to inform his family or authorities. Instead, she cleaned him, changed his clothes, and cashed his social security checks for about 18 months. During those 18 months, Chase talked with him and frequently watched NASCAR with his corpse.
Chase says that his body did not smell, and that she knows she’ll probably go to jail for what she did. Only when Zigler’s estranged family informed police that their father was missing did authorities show up at Zigler’s house. In a way, we feel bad for Chase, for it doesn’t seem like anybody of sound mind would live with their friends corpse for a year and a half. It’s like a weekend at Bernies meets Groundhog Day, except there is no happy ending, just another “strange-but-true” story for the Internet to gawk at.
