Jimmy Owens Closes Out 2012 Lucas Dirt Championship Run In Style

The 2012 Dirt Track World Championships got off to a slow start Friday when the racing action had to be halted because of rain that had moved into the Portsmouth Ohio area.

This meant Saturdays action would include the entire Friday qualifying show. When the action picked back up Jimmy Owens stole the show by leading all but one lap during the 32nd Red Buck Dirt Track World Championship presented by Borrowed Blue main event and concluded a magnificent run in 2012 by not only capturing the DTWC but also the 2012 Lucas Oil Dirt Series championship title by a considerable margin.

“I don’t know what to say, putting my name on that trophy with all the great drivers that have won this race, means a lot to me and my crew. I have to thank my car owner, Mike Reece, we got together in 2007 and it’s been a tremendous relationship since,” said the 40-year-old. “I have to thank my crew we went with the right tire choice, the Cornett Engine ran strong and our goal was to win this race one day and we got it done.”

Don O’Neal started third and quickly jumped to the lead with aspirations of becoming the first ever driver to win back to back dirt track world championships. However he would have to watch Jimmy Owens drive by him on lap 2. O’Neal would go on to finish 3rd.

Scott Bloomquist who had been playing 2nd fiddle to Owens all year long, would finish 2nd to Owens in the race and would come up 10 points shy from stealing 2nd place in points from Don O’Neal.

“Jimmy ran a good race, congrats to him. Don has had a great year as well, it just tells you the strength of this series,” said Bloomquist. “We went with a harder left rear tire than anybody, but we just couldn’t get up to challenge Jimmy.”
Owens would take home $50,000 for the victory.
