Spec engines have polarized dirt track racing with the engine builders on one side and the budget racers on the other. Fans, other racers and promoters vary in their opinions on spec engines. The folks at Dart Machinery saw the divide between those in favor of Spec engines and those against the budget based motors, and looked for a compromise that would satisfy both sides. The result is a new Spec Motor from Dart and an agreement with the World Racing Group’s DirtCar Racing Series that promises to benefit local engine builders and budget based racers at the same time.
The result of this agreement is a 499 cubic inch engine that produces 800 horsepower at 6,800 rpm at a very affordable price tag of $16,466.00. This is roughly what other spec crate engines in this range cost with the added bonus that the engine will be available to anyone who wishes to purchase one, including the local builders who can buy and assemble these engines for the track.

The World Racing Group’s DirtCar Racing Series is implementing a new spec engine program. Not just any spec engine program, though… DirtCar’s new spec engine has something to make everyone happy, even local engine builders.
Everyone involved in the creation of the program wanted to give racers the benefits of a spec engine; affordability and a level playing field, without taking business away from local engine builders and speed shops. To that end DirtCar teamed up with legendary performance giants Dart Machinery and CV Products to forge a unique agreement that accomplishes just that.
Dart has long been an advocate of keeping local engine builders in the game at the race track, and that stance made Dart a perfect fit to provide the key components for the new spec motor. The engine is based on a Dart Big M iron block, with Dart Pro 1 aluminum 325cc cylinder heads and an aluminum Dart single plane intake manifold. The 499 cubic inch power-plant offers excellent performance, with early builds producing in the 800 horsepower range at 6,800 rpm and 700ft/lbs of torque at 5,600 rpm. At a racer price of $16,466.00 for the whole parts package, even more racers should be able to compete in the series.
CV Products brings the whole package together, bringing a reliable distribution to the table that will make getting one of the engines a breeze. The engine will be available to anyone who wishes to purchase one, which means that local builders can freely buy and assemble these engines without breaking the bank!
