Class Act: Levi Kiefer Mod #86

I was witness to one of the most heads up racing I have EVER seen at Victorville.

On Saturday May 23rd, I was standing on the turn 4 fence watching the IMCA Modified Heat races. Levi Kiefer in the #86 started last in his heat. Levi has pretty much dominated the field this year at VAR winning all but the first race of the year. So when I saw he was starting last, I knew we were in for a show.

The green flag drops and Levi started picking his way through traffic. This was the first time I was able to get a good look at his driving style, and I have to say, If you want to learn something, watch him wheel the car. He systematically worked his way into the lead. Passing one car per lap until he went to make the pass for the lead in turn 3.

Levi came out of turn 2 with a full head of steam passing the leader on the outside down the backstretch, and was able to clear him going into turn 3. As Levi cleared him, Levi started to force his competitor to the bottom, making both of them slow down just a bit but it gave Levi the advantage coming off of 4. Or at least that was the plan.

What He and the 2nd place car didn't know at the time, was that sitting in the middle of turns 3-4 was a spun out car. As Levi entered 3 with the former leader inside and to the rear of Kiefer, He noticed the spun out car. Almost instantaneously Levi abrted the press he put on 2nd place and went as high as he could in order to give his competitor the room he needed to avoid the dead car.

Had Levi not moved up the track, that 2nd place car would have either slammed the dead car or Kiefer or both.

I just thought it was a text book example of the difference between a Racer and a Driver. I think anyone can get out there and drive a car, but it takes a Racer to do it with Style and Smarts.
