WSTC: Meet the Drivers #2

Jordan SandsName: Jordan Sands
Division: SECA Crate
Car Number: 99
Hometown: Pilot Mountain, NC

Have you been to the World Short Track Championship Before?
“We went and watched last year but I didn’t race. My whole family is really looking forward to it this year and we are working on getting our cars ready now. The fact that the World Short Track Championship is at the Dirt Track at Charlotte is a really big deal for us small time guys. I race a lot locally but to get to race at Charlotte is a big deal. Last year, it was awesome to see all of the fans that came out to pack the stands. Every time there is a dirt track race and fans pack the stands it makes the drivers feel really good and lets us know our sport is appreciated. I hope we can put on a great show for everyone who shows up.”

Have you been to the World Short Track Championship Before ?
“We went last year and I loved it! I always wanted to race there and we got the opportunity last year and it was awesome. We ran 6th last year after starting 16th in the race. We didn’t know anything about the track or anything since that was our first time and this year we will use what we learned last year and hopefully do a whole lot better. There was a lot of local racers from MMSA that showed up but being at Charlotte, just the facility and atmosphere, it’s not your every Saturday night dirt track. It was really special.”

Chris FergusonName: Chris Ferguson
Division: Late Models
Car Number: 22
Hometown: Mount Holley, NC

Have you been to the World Short Track Championship Before?
Yeah, we were there last year. We finished seventh. It was a great event, great atmosphere, great facility and we are looking forward to being a part of it again this year.

What are your goals for this year’s WSTC?
Obviously, with any race you want to win, but I believe we have a good shot at it this year. We won the May race at Charlotte a couple years back and in this year’s May race, we ran third. We’ve been really strong in the Crate car all year, third is actually the worst we’ve finished all season. Hopefully we can improve on our finish from here in May.

When did you start racing?
11 years ago, when I was 16, I raced my first late model. I started Go-Karts when I was 12.

James PlemmonsName: James Plemmons
Division: Late Models
Car Number: 27
Hometown: Greer, SC

What are your goals for this year’s WSTC?
Our main goal is to time trial in the top-12 and lock ourselves into the Feature.

What do you consider the highlight of your racing career?
In 2010, I lost one of my legs, but that did not stop me from competing. Sure, racing with one leg presents challenges, the biggest being that I can’t trailbreak. I’ve been racing since 2001 and been around it my whole life; I wasn’t going to let a setback take me out of the sport I love.

Ricky NewtonName: Ricky Newton
Division: Sportsman Modifieds
Car Number: 11N
Hometown: Oakfield, NY

Have you been to the World Short Track Championship before?
Yeah, we were there last year. It was a blast and we made sure to circle it on our schedule this season. We had a sixth and fifth place finish last year and we were very proud of that. Our goal this year would be to do the same, if not better.

How long have you been racing? What do you consider the highlight of your racing career?
I’ve been racing since 2005. A couple of weeks ago we won the Topless Nationals, that paid $3,000 to win. That was pretty cool. Hopefully we can pick up another big highlight at the World Short Track Championship.
