Photo Gallery & Recap: Saldana Knows How At Perris Auto Speedway

As the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars rolled into Southern California’s Perris Auto Speedway for the Napa Know How SoCal Showdown, three major stories emerged at the end of the night.

The first big story was written when Joey Saldana’s #9 Great Clips car took the green flag and led from lap one to the checkered flag in the main event after winning the earlier 8 lap dash to determine the A-main starting positions. In victory lane on the front straightaway, Sladana said,  “You don’t get these opportunities very often and getting your first one out of the way early in the season is a big asset to the whole season.”

The World of Outlaws Sprint cars have not been at Perris Auto Speedway since 2007 with Saldana being one of the few current crop of drivers to have raced at the famed West Coast track. Saldana had not experienced good luck at the half mile track in Perris, California previously with finishes outside the top 5 on every previous attempt. “I think the key to victory was the dash. Getting around Jason (Meyers) and getting clean air made a huge difference. And just making sure I chose the right spot on those restarts,” said Saldana.

Joey Saldana won the 8 lap dash then led the A-main from flag to flag for his first win of the season.

Saldana led from flag to flag in the main event, holding off Jason Meyers who pulled to the back of Saldana when the cars got into lap traffic on lap 21 and a restart on lap 23 when Johnathan Allard and Bobby McMahan got together in turn two on lap 23.  This was Saldana’s 79th career World of Outlaws main event win.

Chad Kemenah was glad to be back at Perris and showed it by setting quick time.

The next major story involved Sammy Swindell and the points lead. Leading the Championship points race with a slim 1 point lead coming into Perris, Swindell’s car experienced problems with his car in qualifying when the black #1 slowed to a stop on the back straight on his first attempt. After quick repairs, Swindell came back for a second attempt at qualifying, turning in a mediocre 21st out of 26 cars. What seemed like a tough night ended up decent for the former Champion as he took home the KSE Hard Charger Award after gaining 11 positions finishing in the 8th spot of the A-main. Swindell stretched the one point points lead over Donny Schatz to 15 points.

Swindell is the only driver to finish in the top ten in all five races this season.

The final story of the night involved winged sprint cars coming back to the track after a five year absence. Perris Auto Speedway is known as traditional sprint car (wingless) country. Everyone involved wondered if the winged sprints would bring the fans in to watch a racing event that was out of the normal for the area. The packed grandstands told the story. The Winged Sprint Cars put on a great show and the fans that came to watch were excited about having winged sprints back in SoCal.
