Swanson Makes It Four-In-A-Row At The 2018 Hoosier Hundred

The list of Hoosier Hundred winners reads like a who’s who of American open wheel racing. The race has roots back to 1946 when legendary racer Rex Mays won under the AAA sanction. Bob Sweikert, Jud Larson, Eddie Sachs, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Al Unser Sr., to modern heroes like Dave Darland, Jerry Coons Jr., and Levi Jones have won the race. Held at the Indiana State Fairground in Indianapolis, it is often considered one of the richest and most prestigious dirt track open wheel race the United States. Seven winners of the race have also won the Indianapolis 500.

Shane Cottle, Kody Swanson, Tyler Courtney.

Kody Swanson can now etch his name with the elite of the sport. Only Al Unser Sr., has won the Hoosier Hundred four times consecutively, and only A.J. Foyt has won it more as a six-time winner.

The 2018 edition of the feature event began with Swanson taking a familiar role, leader of the Hoosier Hundred. Challengers would come but fade back. Shane Cockrum attempted to challenge for the lead just after lap 10. Then Brian Tyler took over second and his turn at Swanson. Searching for a line, Tyler managed to  get by Swanson down the straight on lap 29.

#8 Johnny Petrozelle and #99 Korey Weyant race side-by-side.

Holding the front position for the next 11-laps,Tyler was hunted by Swanson, who was able to reassess the situation durning a mid-race caution. Fate would step in on lap 56 when Tyler’s front running car made contact with part of a brake rotor that had come from Chris Windom’s car. Tyler’s car went into the outside wall hard, ending his chance winning the prestigious race.

#47 Austin Mundie and #39 Matt Goodnight.

The restart came down to Swanson and Cockrum for the lead. The repeat champion was able to take control of the lead, and the race, at times stretching out to a 15-car length lead. Swanson was not pressured for the rest of the race as he cruised to the win.

#20 Jerry Coons Jr.and #9 Chris Dyson.

#47 Austin Mundie and #16 Austin Nemire.
